Lombok, the stunning island neighboring Bali, is experiencing a significant upswing in its maritime tourism sector. Gili Mas Port in Lembar is enhancing its readiness to welcome a scheduled series of cruise ship calls through the end of the year, with four key arrivals set for November alone. This surge highlights the island's growing appeal as a premier cruise destination in Indonesia.

The recent calls of the MV Viking Venus on Saturday, November 15th, and the MV Viking Orion on Monday, November 17th, brought approximately 800 tourists and 200 crew members each to Lombok's shores. Upon disembarking, these visitors fanned out to explore the island's renowned attractions, including the beautiful beaches of Senggigi, the historic Lingsar Temple Complex, the royal gardens of Narmada, and the capital city of Mataram. This influx of international tourists provides a substantial boost to the local economy, particularly benefiting the tourism sector and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

A Coordinated Effort for a Seamless Experience

In response to this growing trend, PT Pelindo Multi Terminal (SPMT), the operator of Gili Mas Port, is implementing a comprehensive service optimization strategy. Kunto Wibisono, Branch Manager of SPMT Lembar, explained that the port is maximizing its passenger terminal facilities and coordinating closely with shipping agents, port authorities, security officials, and the local government to ensure smooth embarkation and disembarkation processes.

“To welcome cruise tourists, we go beyond logistics,” stated Wibisono. “We also present authentic cultural attractions, such as performances of gendang beleq, the traditional ‘big drum’ music of Lombok, to create a memorable first impression.”

Within the passenger terminal, SPMT has dedicated welcome areas and curated stalls for local SMEs to sell distinctive Lombok souvenirs, from handwoven textiles to traditional crafts, ensuring tourist spending directly supports the community.

Sustained Growth and Future Preparations

The upward trajectory is set to continue. Two more cruise ship visits are scheduled for November 22nd and 23rd, with one being a larger vessel capable of carrying up to 3,000 passengers. “This clearly indicates a rising trend in cruise passenger volume to Lombok,” Wibisono affirmed.

SPMT has documented a steady increase in cruise ship calls over recent years and is preparing long-term strategies for infrastructure and service development. This aims to strengthen Lombok's competitiveness as a must-visit maritime tourism hub.

“We are incredibly enthusiastic about the cruise visits this November,” Wibisono emphasized, reiterating the port's commitment to delivering comfortable and memorable experiences through prepared facilities, cross-agency collaboration, cultural showcases, and SME support.

He added that cruise tourism plays a dual role in bolstering the broader tourism sector while empowering the local economy. SPMT remains committed to continuously monitoring and evaluating its operational services, maintaining strong synergy with all stakeholders, including the Regional Government, port authorities, security forces, and local cultural communities.

With this coordinated approach, Lombok is not merely receiving visitors; it is rolling out the red carpet, offering a world-class welcome that promises economic benefits for its people and an unforgettable experience for its guests.
